Beautiful antique S.J. Addis wood carving gouge cast steel chisel 3/8 inches wide and 7 inches long with hardwood handle. Gouge chisel is marked with a Masonic crossed compass and square followed by S.J addis name and England stamped on the other side of the tool. It was most likely made in the 1880’s by the edge tool makers Ward and Payne, Sheffield, who purchased the trademark “S.J. ADDIS” after his death in 1871.
Aside from collector interest in Addis carving tools, the leading carving experts, when asked about second-hand or classic carving tools, almost always list “Addis”, “Herring Bros.” and “Ward & Payne” as the best.
